Valles Caldera Cleanup Day - JUNE 7TH

On June 7, Los Amigos volunteers will help clean up the historic district on the Preserve. We ask volunteers to arrive at the Preserve around 9:00 a.m. This is a tentative schedule for the day:

9:00 – 9:30 a.m. meet at Valle Grande Staging area; carpool to HQ

9:30 – 11:30 Ana and Shannon lead tour/discussion of historic district

11:30 – 1:00 p.m. lunch at HQ (It's Pot Luck ... Bring something tasty!)

1:00 – 5:00 Rourke and Tracy lead HQ work party

5:00 – 5:30 p.m. return to Staging area and depart

In the morning, Shannon Dennison and Ana Steffen will talk with the group about the historic cabins, HQ historic district, and historic preservation considerations.

After lunch, the volunteers will help:
• remove debris (old appliances, railroad ties, scrap wood and wire, etc.) around HQ cabins;
• remove debris (firewood, old signs, wood, bottles, etc.) from porches of all cabins;
• remove debris (bricks, wood, sandbags, etc.) and organize equipment around corrals;
• remove debris from Cerro La Jara parking area;
• place boundary marker/line at corral parking area;
• bury or visually block exposed pipes around HQ cabins;
• stack rocks around exposed culverts on VC01 road.

Rourke McDermott will coordinate trucks and trailers for trash, and will have other materials on site. Rourke and Tracy Hephner will lead different groups in these work projects simultaneously.

Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and bring coats, hats, and sunscreen. Volunteers should also bring the following tools if they have them:

· work gloves (leather)
· shovels (round and flat mouthed)
· rakes (bow rake)
· wire snips.
