Banco Bonito Mountain Biking

The Valles Caldera is opening up the Banco Bonito area for Mountain Biking on alternating weekends this summer beginning May 31st. This area is in the southwestern portion of the Preserve.

I've ridden it extensively and helped put on a Mountain Biking event there a few years ago. There are great trails in the area that wind up and down heavily forested trails. [Photo: Riders take a break along the trails]

You can ride out to El Cajete where horse races once occured. You can drop down to Redondo Meadows on the Duke Trail. I've seen plenty of wild life on the Duke Trail, including at least three bear. Make sure to get you, your friends and a tasty lunch out there at least once this year. Who knows how long this opportunity will last.

For dates and details see (the events are under "Mountain Biking Trails"):

And I am sure the Caldera could use a few volunteers to help with these events. Contact Rob Dixon (see post below this one for contact details) to inquire about volunteering.

In the map below the trails that will be available are the one's in red and possibly the trails that circle El Cajete (on the right side of the map).
